Feliz Cumpleaños A Mí!

Hoy cumplí 20 años en Costa Rica!

(Today is my 20th birthday!)

I am a firm believer in indulging in multiple pieces of cake on your birthday, so that's exactly what I did. I had cake after breakfast and two pieces of cake for lunch. The group and I celebrated my birthday in the grupo office with cake, Coke, and the happy birthday song. What an awesome way to spend my day!

Me in my new shirt that Sara and Soli gave me for my birthday! It has monkeys on it and says "Costa Rica Party". Its awesome!

Trueno- Thunder (Sometimes when it rains in CR there is super loud trueno)

Rompecabezas- Puzzle (literal translation: break heads) (Soli put together two rompecabezas and framed them)

Fregadero- Sink (Every morning after breakfast I leave my plates in the fregadero)

Pasa- Raisin (Some people like pasas in their bagels)

Vínculo- Link/ tie (Now that I've been living here for almost 3 months, I have a lot of vínculos to CR)

Virus- Virus (Doña Rosa (my babysitter) told me that my stomach hurts because I have a virus)

Gaveta- Drawer (My moms bought new lining for the kitchen gavetas)

Aula- Classroom (The aulas at UCR are very similar to the ones at KU)

Medusa- Jellyfish (Medusa stings hurt... A LOT)

Árbitro- Referee (The árbitros at the Saprissa game seemed to be blind at times)

Arco Iris- Rainbow (Even though it rains a lot in CR, I have yet to see an arco iris)

Placa- license plate (In CR your placa number determines what days you can drive on)

Oruga- Caterpillar (Sara kicked the spiky oruga that wandered into the house out the door)

Tuanis- Cool (not temperature) (That girl Sydney is so tuanis)

Pulga- Flea (Some stray dogs have lots of pulgas)

Marea Vivas- Riptide (Mareas vivas can suck people out into the ocean)

Estrella Fugaz- Shooting Star (I can't tell you what I wished for on my estrella fugaz)

Olla- Pot (We mixed the tortilla dough in an olla)

Alfombra- Carpet (The floor in my room is wood, not alfombra)

Tela de araña- Spider web (I saw a lot of telas de araña on my spider hunt)

Portón- Gate (All of the houses in this neighborhood have barred portones)

Culebra- Snake (I haven't seen any culebras in CR)

Acera- Sidewalk (The aceras in CR have lots of cracks and holes)

Miga- Crumb (The ants here like to eat migas)

Derretir- Melt (Ice likes to derretir quickly in the Costa Rica heat)

Temores- Fears (I am conquering my temores of spiders by not screaming when I see them)

Maquinar- Conspire (The spiders in CR want to maquinar to hide in my sheets)

Sábana- Bed sheet (I hope I never find a spider in my sábanas)

Colchon- Mattress (In CR I sleep on a very firm colchon)

Guineo- A small banana like fruit (I can't wait to eat some small guienos)

Ansia- Craving (I have an ansia for a PB&J because I haven't had one in CR)

Bazar- Variety store (Many stores in CR are considered to be bazars)

Casco- Helmet (We saw players wearing cascos for thier American football game)

Cruce de peatones- Crosswalk (I always try to use cruces de peatones when I cross the street)

Cuesta- Hill (I walked up some big cuestas today)

Ampolla- Blister (I wore flats today that gave me ampollas that hurt)

Amanece- Sunrise (I have been getting up just after the amanece every morning)

Rana- Frog (The symbol for the phone service in CR is a little green rana)

Boliche- Bowling (Ryan and Soli are both champions at boliche)

Rascar- To scratch (I should not rascar my mosquito bites)

Ardilla- Squirrel (In the U.S. there are brown ardillas)

Zacate- Sod/grass (My host moms brought some zacate for their yard in Santa Cruz)

Arena- Sand (I had arena all over my feet after walking on the beach)

Concha- Shell (I found a cool concha on the beach)

Sombrilla- Umbrella (If you are in Costa Rica during the rainy season, you NEED a sombrilla)
